Early this month, Young Thug got us all excited after he announced he would be dropping an album "in 2 days." After 48 hours had successfully passed by without receiving the project, it had become clear that we would have to wait a little longer. A new release date was not announced after Thugger found himself locked behind bars and sample clearance issues appeared to plague the artist's go-to engineer, Alex Tumay. When he made his way out of prison, hope was restored and alas, On The Rvn has finally arrived. First impressions have been pretty solid and while some tweaking and tuning have already been announced by the Slime God, one song is emerging as an early standout.

Tonight, Lil Wayne's long-awaited Tha Carter V will finally drop after years of anticipation. The rapper initially announced that the project would be released in 2013, but clearly, that never happened and his contract with Cash Money prevented him from releasing the project. For a while, it felt like it would never end up coming out, but here we are, five years later and Wayne is finally getting ready to release the fifth installment in Tha Carter series. To honor the release of the project, it only felt right to dedicate this week's #TBT to a cut from arguably one of the best Lil Wayne studio albums in his catalog. listen below

Major Lazer debuts a new song “Tied Up” featuring Nigerian singer Mr. Eazi and Raye today. “Tied Up” follows the recent release of “Orkant/Balance Pon It” featuring South African singer Babes Wodumo and “All My Life” featuring Nigerian vocalist Burna Boy, and is the third of a handful of collaborations with African artists coming from Major Lazer this fall. As Burna Boy continues to give us hit after hit, we joyously travel down the rabbit hole with him. ‘Gbona’ is a politically conscious track, in which Burna Boy subtly addresses the direct relativity of one’s wealth to their respectability. There is also the reminder to enjoy oneself and ’Jeun soke’ when the opportunity presents itself, but always stay sharp. As usual, the messages on the track are delivered with a light tone. The instrumental is very traditional afrobeats, and Burna Boy pays tribute to Fela with one of his popular phrases. The video, directed by Clarence Peters, is a visual masterpiece that takes us home. Again, we see tributes to Fela with dances commonly associated with his dancers and costumes that are a modern adaptation of their style. Watch:

The New Yorker magazine has released a feature on Nigerian musicians, who it describes as “changing the sound of global pop”. Photographer Namsa Leuba travelled to Lagos to capture photos of some of Nigeria’s biggest stars for the feature. The feature describes 2Baba as “a kind of Afrobeats godfather” and tells the story of his rise in the music industry, as well as how he paved the way for younger acts nearly two decades ago.
